Trust & safety
Real conversations between strangers across the world deserve real safeguards — for the people on both sides of the call. Here is exactly what we do.
Conversations are recorded and monitored
Every conversation is recorded and transcribed, and transcripts are screened for safety — crisis language, abuse, harassment, and content-standard violations. Flagged conversations are reviewed by a human. This is disclosed to everyone at signup, consented to before the first conversation, and shown as a persistent notice in every call.
Monitoring exists for safety, not as a product. Recordings and transcripts are not shared with other members, are retained only as long as our safety process needs them, and are then deleted. Monitoring protects guides too: abusive behavior toward a guide is acted on.
PG standards, both directions
All conversations are held to PG standards. No sexual content, no harassment, no hate, no solicitation — and no requests for medical, psychological, financial, or legal advice, which guides are trained to warmly decline. This is not a dating service, and romantic advances end the conversation.
Off-platform contact between members and guides is not permitted. It keeps the exchange safe, bounded, and fair to everyone.
The clinician escalation path
If a conversation suggests someone may be in crisis — whether a guide raises a concern during the call or our monitoring flags it afterward — the situation is escalated to a licensed clinician on retainer. Guides are trained to recognize and escalate, never to counsel; the clinician handles triage, outreach, and referral to appropriate care.
Crisis resources are always one click away in every session. In the United States, you can call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) at any time, free, 24/7.
We say this plainly: BhutanHappy is a cultural exchange. It is not counseling, not medical care, and not a crisis service — and we have built the service so that nobody ever has to pretend otherwise.
The guide hand-off guarantee
Any guide may pass any client on to another guide, at any time, without giving a reason and without penalty of any kind. Their pay, standing, and schedule are unaffected — this is enforced by how the system is built, not by policy alone.
For members, guide rotation is a normal part of the service: your next conversation is simply with another excellent guide. If you’re ever unhappy with a change, tell us and we’ll make it right.
Questions about safety?
We’d rather over-answer than under-answer. Write to [email protected] and a human will respond.
